Char Siew
Char Siew is a decadent Cantonese barbecued pork dish that utilizes either pork shoulder or pork belly for a fattier and more decadent result.
Ingredients
- 4 1/2 oz pork shoulder
- 2 tbsp five spice blend
- 2 tbsp white pepper
- 3 tbsp white granulated sugar
- 4 tbsp light soy sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 3 tbsp oyster sauce
- 3 tbsp fermented bean paste
- 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
- 8 tbsp honey
Instructions
- Cut 2kg of pork shoulder into 1 inch thick strips
- In a bowl combine the five spice powder, white pepper, sugar, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, bean paste, rice wine, and honey and mix thoroughly.
- Place the strips of pork into a large plastic freezer bag and pour the marinade into the bag. Make sure the strips are well coated with the marinade. Refrigerate overnight.
- The following day, preheat the oven at 350 degrees F and remove the pork strips and lay the meat out on a grilling rack placed on a baking sheet.
- Roast the strips of pork in 2 batches.
- Roast for about 15 minutes on the broiler rack of the oven.
- Then turn the strips, and brush both side with the marinade and continue roasting the pork for another 15 minutes.
- Remove. Allow the meat to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Then serve.
